Welcome to Our Blog

This summer -- from July 19 until August 26 -- six of us will travel to Europe to visit a group of eight au pairs and their families, each of whom lived with our family for one year from 2001 until 2009. Our travelers include Pam, her three children -- Hannah (12), Daniel (9), and Adam (8), Pam's mother, Peg, and mother-in-law, Terry.

We begin our trip in Lucerne, Switzerland and end in Paris, France. In between, we'll be visiting Venice, northern Germany, and Sweden. I hope that by the end, you will have read posts by many of us -- giving you a view of our trip from a variety of perspectives. Please follow us as we travel and discover....

The Hills are Alive!

We couldn't help but think of Maria and the Sound of Music as we climbed higher and higher by cograil to the top of Mt. Rigi today.
The kids and me overlooking Lake Luzern
The mountain is on Lake Luzern, and to get there we boarded a steamboat near Mark's home.  It was another hot day, so being on the Lake was incredibly refreshing.  The kids were ready to jump in for a swim (but that came later in the day!).
Upon arriving at the top, we stopped to have a drink, and the kids had some lunch.  They are still struggling with jet lag, so I actually encouraged Dan (who was especially punky) to drink a Coke -- I thought that caffeine and some sugar would do him some good!
We are all still suffering from jet lag!
After lunch, mom and Terry rode the cograil down while Tom (our trusty guide - Mark was working), the kids and I hiked down.  The scenery was absolutely spectacular -- and the sounds of cowbells completed the picture postcard experience.
The boat took us back to Luzern where we went to a really cool bath house for a swim.  The Swiss are doing something right with their conservation efforts -- the lake water is a Mediterranean blue and is crystal clear.  The kids loved it.  This bathing spot provided a sectioned off area for shallow swimming -- but also offered an area where swimmers clim into the water and swim out to floating logs.  The trick is to stay on the logs without tumbling off into the water.  It was a great end to a hot and sunny afternoon.  The swimming also helped to wake us all up a bit in the late afternoon when we all begin to fade.
Dan, Tom, Hannah, and Adam holding on tightly to the floating log!
Oh, I haven't yet mentioned Mark and Tom's rigged outdoor shower.  It's set up on their patio, which has a fabulous view of one of the tallest mountains around.  Hannah is hooked.  She took a shower outside last night and tonight, and Dan gave it a try tonight.  Forget the Alps....I predict that the shower will be a lasting memory of our time in Switzerland.
Dan enjoying an outdoor shower on Mark & Tom's patio - with an amazing mountain view.
Tomorrow we head to Basel to spend the day with Sara.  Sara was our fourth au pair and hasn't seen the kids in about five years!  Adam was not yet three when she finished her year with us.
